Book and a Blanket Program
Warmed The Winter for City Students
From 2008-2010, the Book and a Blanket Program offered nearly 7,000 cozy fleece blankets and pleasure reading books to our youngest city students. Each year, sets were given to students at 10 city schools just before the holidays.
Adult and student volunteers from the city and suburbs read the new books to the students, as the students wrapped themselves in their soft fleece blankets. Some children wore the blanket over their shoulders, and others put their heads down on the fleece while they listened to their very own book being read aloud.
Rochester Education Foundation administered the program from 2008-2010. The Book and a Blanket program was created five years ago by Buddies, Bridges and Brains, a Victor-based organization that supports partnerships between the town of Victor and Rochester schools.
Thanks to The Marie and Joseph C. Wilson Foundation, Time Warner, Target, Rep. Susan John, Bucks 4 Books, the Brighter Days Foundation, BJ's Foundation, Nixon-Hargrave, and the M & T Bank Foundation for their support of this program.
Although REF is no longer administering this program, we will happily accept contributions of new books, books purchased on our website, and funds to buy books for the continuing project, which is being administered by Buddies, Bridges and Brains once more.
